Sun Microsystems

Spun off the Stanford University Network team (hence the name), Sun Microsystem was one of the first, and one of the most successful, Unix system vendors in the late '80s and the '90s.
After the emergence of a strong PC market with systems able to compete with the performance of Sun workstations at a fraction of their price, Sun faced hard times, and eventually got stabbed acquired by Oracle.
